Queenly Reviews • Riverdale

Riverdale is the dark and twisted spin on the classic Archie Comics. Season 2 of Riverdale premieres on October 11, but you can catch season one on Netflix or stream it online. There are 13 episodes, so you’ll be finished before you know it. I’ve been pretty excited to write about it, so I’m just going to get straight to it.

My rating: 4/5 Crowns • 👑👑👑👑

The small town of Riverdale is seemingly perfect… But everything looks perfect from far away. Though it’s modern day, you still get the classic vibes through the wardrobe, the language, and the setting of the town. I instantly fell in love with the characters and the overall scene for Riverdale. The modern changes might be something the original Archie fans aren’t too fond of, but it’s what makes the show all the more alluring.

Basically, the plot for the season surrounds the recent tragic death of Jason Blossom, and the story behind his death. There’s also drama with the characters and their families… Nail-biting, jaw-dropping, edge of your seat type drama. Twisted, twisted, drama. The story behind Jason Blossom’s death and all the the other secrets of the small town of Riverdale will truly captivate your mind.

The characters are amazing, and they also picked the PERFECT actors for each of the roles. The characters aren’t cliche or cookie-cutter types, which I absolutely love. They all have their flaws. The “mean girls” of this story are totally badass– and as mentioned above they aren’t the cliche mean girls you’re used to seeing on TV.

So here’s a little about the main characters and my thoughts on them.

Archie Andrews is portrayed by KJ Apa. If there are any Gossip Girl fans reading this he totally reminds me of Nate Archibald. And also has like 5 different love interests per season like Nate. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating, but he had too many love interest and the first one happened to be his music teacher. I could’ve done without that plot, it’s an overused plot and the teacher was super weird, but the drama was good enough, I guess. I do wish they would have done more with her character and stretched the storyline a little. I do like Archie, and he’s the classic golden boy. It’s hard to not like him. Plus KJ Apa is a total heartthrob. His parents, Fred and Mary, are portrayed by two all-time favorites Luke Perry and Molly Ringwald. The parents are just as interesting, and have plenty secrets of their own.

Betty Cooper is portrayed by Lili Reinhart.  She starts off as the sweet, smart, perfect girl next door, but her character evolves so much through the show. There’s a dark side in all of us, and Betty’s will show. The Coopers, along with the Blossoms, were the most interesting families, and they are also connected which you’ll learn more about. There are so many secrets with the Coopers, and as the show goes on the Cooper’s utopian life really starts to unravel.

Veronica Lodge is portrayed by Camilla Mendes. She definitely gives me Blair Waldorf vibes. While Veronica is new to the city of Riverdale, her parents have much history with the town. Veronica was your typical mean girl, but after losing almost everything and reevaluating her life, she’s trying to make up for past mistakes. While being a mean girl isn’t really her anymore, she still has that iciness to her. Fierce and fearless, Veronica is not one to mess with. Not only will you love her classic style, you will love Veronica.

Jughead Jones is portrayed by Cole Sprouse. Don’t pretend that you never watched the Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Cole Sprouse was the “nerdy” twin, and while Jughead Jones is still quite a genius, he has a much more dark side to him. In my younger days, I was definitely a fan, so seeing him in this role is quite interesting. This character had a lot of tough moments, and I wondered if they were ever going to just cut him some slack. Jughead and Betty are two characters who’s storylines develop a lot as the season goes on, and I’m excited to see what this next season has in store for the two.

Cheryl Blossom is portrayed by Madeline Petsch. She’s easily my favorite character. There’s not too much I want to add about the Blossoms, since the main plot of the show surrounds them. I will say that there’s so much more to the family than what meets the eye, and from beginning to end you will be shocked. Cheryl is Riverdale’s “gothic princess”. As quirky as she seems, she has an evil side, as inherited from her parents. The Blossom storyline was crazy from beginning to end, and it’s the kind of nail biting drama that will keep you watching.

The season finale will lead you to the plot of the next season. The last few episodes wrapped up the season perfectly, and left you wondering what’s next for the Riverdale crew. I have a lot of hope for Riverdale. This show has a much potential! The new season premieres tonight and I’ve been looking forward to it. If Riverdale sounds like something you’d be interested in, I highly recommend it!
